Unit 2: Chapter 9

When starting a business, it is important to research the market you plan to go into. A market is a group of potential customers who are all looking for a similar product or service. Your business needs to stand out in its market, or else it will likely be overshadowed by an existing business in the same market. By looking at other businesses in the market, you can get ideas on how to make your business work, and how to make it stand out. Market research should continue throughout your business in order to ensure your business remains successful. Catering to your market may seem like a daunting task, but with proper research, it can be manageable.

There are many factors that should be considered when conducting market research, however, there are three main factors that are the most important to a successful business. Customers, competition, and business environment are the most important factors in a market. Customers differ from market to market, so it’s important to know what your customers want. For example, if your market contains lots of students, you could have sales during winter break. In some markets, competition makes it very difficult to run your business. It is important that customers view your business as “better” than your competitors. The term business environment relates to current events or trends that are happening. Sales can be boosted by relating your product or service to what is popular. These factors all relate to each other, and are equally important to a business’s success.

The next step of market research is to research how profits will be made. A good start for many businesses is an investor. Investors can help with the early costs of a business, and come to collect later once a business has started to make a profit. Different markets make profits in different ways, so investment opportunities may be limited based on your market. Market research can help with choosing the right investor, and getting your business to a stage where it can start to profit.
